Is Bold Wallpaper Out in 2026, and What Replaces the Loud Pattern?

Last updated: October 7, 2026

In short: Some of the loudest patterns are aging out, according to designers speaking to Apartment Therapy, The Spruce and Livingetc between late 2025 and early 2026. What designers describe instead is quieter and more specific: scenic and mural-like designs, a pattern chosen for a particular space, and a pattern you love more than one that is trending. A pattern drawn from a single painting fits that direction well.

Which wallpaper styles are fading in 2026?

The busy, repeated, one-size-fits-all pattern. Darci Hether, speaking to The Spruce in 2026, says: "What is fading are the overly busy, one-size-fits-all patterns." In Apartment Therapy (2 November 2025), New York designer Lara Apelian says big floral prints can conjure "grandmom's attic vibes."

The accent wall is also cooling. In Livingetc (5 January 2026), Nina Litchfield of Nina Litchfield Studios says: "While a feature wall creates an immediate focus that creates initial excitement, it often loses its novelty over time."

What are designers choosing instead?

A design with a reason to be in the room. Hether continues: "The staying power lies in thoughtful, space-specific selections." Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene, says in the same Livingetc piece: "a scenic design has an extraordinary ability to transform a space."

The common thread is scale and intention. A large-scale, scenic or painterly pattern gives a room one idea to live with. A busy repeat asks the eye to keep reading.

How do you choose a pattern that will last?

By choosing for love, as the designers keep saying. Louise McGarry, creative director of Pineapple Interiors, offers the line that holds in any year: "I would always say choose a pattern or print that you love and not one that is trending."

Trends describe what is arriving. A wall covering lives on for a decade or longer, so the question that matters is whether you still want to see the pattern in a decade.

Why does a pattern drawn from a painting suit this shift?

Because it comes from a single idea with a single author. Each pattern in this studio's wallpaper collection is drawn from one of my original paintings, which is why the wall reads as singular: evocative, rich and deep. The wallpaper itself is a printed product, made by a manufacturer onto 20 oz Type II commercial-grade vinyl, in 24-inch pre-trimmed, unpasted rolls (52 inches for commercial). The pattern begins with a hand-painted original, and the product does not pretend to be one.

The look is a painter's mark scaled to a wall. It is quieter than a decorative motif because it was never meant to repeat for the sake of repeating.

Designers and specifiers can use the Trade Program for samples and for custom colorways or scale. This post makes no fire-rating or cleaning-certification claim; specifiers should ask the studio for current documentation before specifying.
