Artist Portfolio
Selected works, by series.
Selected works by Nashville abstract painter Angela Simeone — twenty years of original oil and mixed media painting, organized into her most relevant series. Three representative paintings shown for each, with a downloadable tear sheet offering a deeper look. Editorial features in Architectural Digest, Luxe, Forbes, Domino, and House Beautiful; installations at Blackberry Mountain, the Conrad Nashville, the Frist Clinic, Sarah Cannon Cancer Center, and Peabody Union; collectors including the Titans, the Predators, the 76ers, US senators, country music artists, and designers nationwide.
Astral Thicket
Astral Thicket began with Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" — a poem I've written into each of my three sons' graduation dedications. The series is built from the ground up: walnuts harvested and boiled from my own yard become the base stain, layered with crushed and ground oil and wax pigments, then lifted by pops of dusty pastel. Each painting is both a forest disappearing and a night sky twinkling — stillness and linework falling together to make a quiet, natural statement.

Large scale painting requires a horizontal working surface and the freedom to approach the canvas from all four sides. The work is composed in the round, not in front of — the body circling, leaning, retreating, returning, until what was made standing above can be read standing in front of. The brush moves from the shoulder, there is very little wrist work, and the material gets pushed, smeared, and scraped across the canvas in layers that keep a life of their own — surfaces built up and worked back over weeks until the gesture finally settles. A large-scale piece resists a single focal point on purpose — there's no beginning and no end. The eye keeps traveling, the body keeps moving through it, the painting keeps unfolding. Large artworks suit interior design schemes that require a story to be told or an environment to be created — commercial projects, hotel lobbies, public spaces.

Painterly Originals is the working core of the studio — the way I paint when nothing else dictates the result. Each piece is built up and scraped back in layers: oil thinned with medium, charcoal underdrawing, palette knife, fingertip, sometimes whole compositions painted over weeks before they settle. The work stays in continual flux until it doesn't — a surface that has been argued with until it finally agrees. Palette here runs the full range, from quiet plum and tiffany blue to army green and cranberry, depending on what the painting asks for. These are the paintings designers reach for when a room needs a piece that holds its own without explaining itself.
