Does Human-Made Wallpaper Still Matter When AI Can Draw a Pattern?
Last updated: October 8, 2026
In short: The clearest test from inside the trade came in 2023, when the commercial wallcovering maker Wolf-Gordon ran seven artists' original patterns through AI image tools and published the results. Its chief creative officer, Marybeth Shaw, said: "Often, there is something about AI imagery output that gives us pause." She also expects the two to influence each other. What a pattern keeps when a person starts it is a mark with variation in it, and an author who can say where it began.
What did Wolf-Gordon's human-versus-AI experiment find?
That the machine could echo a pattern and still miss what made it. In "Project: HI > AI" (Hotel Business, 23 August 2023), Wolf-Gordon invited seven creatives to make original patterns. They described their work in words, and those descriptions were fed into AI imaging software. Curator and Chief Creative Officer Marybeth Shaw and design director Michael Loughlin then refined the prompts and outputs.
Shaw's reading of the results: "Often, there is something about AI imagery output that gives us pause." She adds: "We sense something different that reads as a visual misunderstanding." She is also open about the other direction. "Elements of AI imagery will undoubtedly make their way into human-generated works," she says, and in Wolf-Gordon's own HOWL magazine: "This AI rupture will undoubtedly influence human artists."
It was a measured experiment from a company that sells wallcoverings, and a useful one for that reason.
What did the artists say?
They described the thing a machine was asked to imitate. Calligrapher and sign painter Jen Mussari, whose pattern was built from letterforms, told Metropolis (27 September 2023): "Trained human hands have made words from these shapes for centuries to communicate, but what would a machine do with something seemingly so simple?" Metropolis reported that the AI version lacked the variation in ink and brush pressure found in her original.
Conceptual artist Christine Tarkowski said: "As an artist, I look to geometry to explore what the literal cannot." Her original, Large Square, was made by pouring molten glass onto wet, folded butcher paper, which burned through the layers and left a pattern once unfolded.
Artist Ghislaine Viñas asked in HOWL: "What is so inherently, indisputably human? Taking something 'good' and turning it on its head."
Mussari also gave the balanced view at a Wolf-Gordon panel, reported by SURFACE (22 August 2023): "I think the best part about AI is that when it's a tool used by an artist, it creates something cool." The common thread is that the artist comes first.
What does a painter's pattern carry that a prompt does not?
A hand, and a reason. North Carolina artist Liane Ricci, who turned loose drawings and paintings into wallpaper, told Business of Home (9 September 2021): "Paint has a mind of its own—you don't know which direction it will go." Her stated aim: "My mission is to create painted environments that you walk into and make you feel good."
That unpredictability is the thing a pattern inherits from its source. When a painting comes first, the wall carries its accidents, its pressure and its pace.
How is a pattern drawn from a painting made?
Each pattern in this studio's wallpaper collection is drawn from one of my original paintings, which is why the wall reads as singular: evocative, rich and deep. The wallpaper itself is a printed product, made by a manufacturer onto 20 oz Type II commercial-grade vinyl, in 24-inch pre-trimmed, unpasted rolls (52 inches for commercial). The pattern begins with a hand-painted original, and the product does not pretend to be one.
How do you choose a pattern with a real author?
Ask who made the original and what it began as. Look for variation in the mark: pressure that changes, edges that are not identical, a rhythm that was decided and not generated. Ask for a sample and hold it to the light you actually have.
Designers and specifiers can use the Trade Program for samples and for custom colorways or scale. This post makes no fire-rating or cleaning-certification claim; specifiers should ask the studio for current documentation before specifying.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI make wallpaper patterns as good as an artist?
Wolf-Gordon's 2023 Project: HI > AI tested the question with seven artists' original patterns, and its chief creative officer, Marybeth Shaw, said "there is something about AI imagery output that gives us pause." Artist Jen Mussari separately said that when AI is a tool used by an artist, it creates something cool. The experiment treats the machine as a collaborator that still needs a person to start from.
What is artist-designed wallpaper?
At this studio, each pattern is drawn from one of Angela Simeone's original paintings and printed by a manufacturer onto 20 oz Type II commercial-grade vinyl. The wallpaper is a printed product, and the pattern begins with a painting.
How can I tell whether a wallpaper pattern has a real author?
Ask who made the original, what it began as, and whether the variation of a human mark is visible in the pattern. Metropolis described the AI version of one calligraphy pattern as lacking the variation in ink and brush pressure found in the artist's original.
Can designers order samples of artist-designed wallpaper?
Yes. The Trade Program offers samples and custom colorways or scale to designers and specifiers. This post makes no fire-rating or cleaning-certification claim; specifiers should ask the studio for current documentation.
