Article: A New Voice in Luxury Wallpaper

Flourish wallpaper in violet — a bespoke artist-designed vinyl pattern by Nashville artist Angela Simeone

A New Voice in Luxury Wallpaper

The great wallpaper houses earned their place. Schumacher, Phillip Jeffries, Lee Jofa — their archives hold some of the most beautiful pattern and texture ever put to a wall, and designers reach for them for good reason. There's a reassurance in that kind of history, a craft handed down across decades. I love those houses. Nothing I make is meant to take anything away from them.

But there's room in a room for more than one idea. My line isn't a replacement for the houses you already trust — it's a different voice in the same conversation, and it comes from somewhere they structurally can't: a single painter's studio.

Where my wallpaper comes from

Every pattern I make begins as one of my own paintings. It starts as mark-making, or as a snapshot of a canvas in progress in my Nashville studio, and then I work it — over months, through trial and error, sampling and refining — into a repeat that holds the same gesture and color as the original. The pattern that ends up on your wall is the same hand and color sense behind my work at the Conrad Nashville and in national design press.

That origin is the whole difference. A heritage house prints a beloved document into thousands of homes; the more traditional patterns, you start to see everywhere. Mine don't work that way. Because each one is drawn from a painting rather than a catalog, the result is singular — evocative, rich, and deep in a way a mass-produced print isn't. It has the feel of an artisanal line, because that's exactly what it is.

Like Schumacher, Phillip Jeffries, and Lee Jofa, this is a bespoke, artisanal, to-the-trade line held to a luxury standard — that lineage of craft is the company I want to keep. Where those houses give you the beauty of a deep archive, I give you the beauty of a single artist's hand: small, considered runs drawn from original paintings, made for designers who want what those names represent and something genuinely their own.

Atelier wallpaper in black and golden — an artist-designed Type II vinyl pattern by Angela Simeone

Built like art that has to live on a wall

New doesn't mean precious. The substrate is a luxury 20 oz Type II commercial-grade vinyl — an embossed face with a slight strié-shimmer over a laminated fabric backing — and it reads far more luxe than flat matte paper while standing up to real life. It's scrubbable, moisture-resistant, and rated for the same high-traffic and hospitality walls as the work I install in hotels and restaurants, where flat paper would scuff, lift at the seams, and tear. Rolls come 24 inches wide, pre-trimmed and unpasted, with a 52-inch width available for commercial jobs.

So you get the look and feel of a painting on the wall, with the durability the great commercial houses are known for. The two don't have to be a trade-off.

For designers

This is where being one artist, rather than a mill, becomes an advantage. Because the patterns are my own paintings, I can re-ground a design in your project's palette or shift its scale to fit a double-height wall or an intimate powder room — custom colorways and custom scale, to the trade. There's a trade discount, samples for your library, and a studio that talks to you directly. It's the artist-authored option for designers who love the great houses but want something on the wall that no other project will have.

Adding to the conversation

I'm not interested in arguing that the old names are out. They're not — they're wonderful, and they'll stay wonderful. I'm interested in adding something to the conversation: original art, made by hand, translated to the wall, for the rooms that want to feel like no one else's.

A few patterns to start with

If you're not sure where to begin, a few favorites: Flourish Greige, Lavish Deepest Green & Magenta, Flourish Storm Blue, Lavish Moss Grey & Deep Violet, Chic Stripe Ruby, and Atelier Golden Sky.
