Who Is the Hand Behind a Designer Wallpaper Collection?

Last updated: 14 October 2026

In short: A designer collection is worth the hand behind it. Calico Wallpaper's Cadence, made with Athena Calderone, credits a French decorative painter whose hand-rendered artwork was layered with scans of real textures. The wall is printed, and the surface began as someone's hand. Artist-designed wallpaper makes the same claim from a painting: the canvas is made by hand, and the pattern drawn from it is printed onto commercial-grade vinyl.

What is Cadence, and who made it?

Calico Wallpaper launched Cadence in February 2026 as Athena Calderone's first wallpaper collection, reported by Designers Today. It draws on the subtle beauty and texture of natural hides, was conceived for Calderone's Tribeca apartment, debuts at her new atelier, and comes in six colorways named alabaster, fawn, jasper, oxblood, porcelain and tobacco.

The article credits a skilled French artisan and decorative painter who worked with both teams, though it does not name the artisan. Calico's creative director and co-founder Rachel Cope says, "I am endlessly inspired by Athena's effortless mastery of color, texture, and materiality."

Does a hand-rendered original change what a wall delivers?

Calico's own Cadence story describes the artisan's hand-rendered artwork layered with high-resolution scans of real textures, with faint seam lines embedded to suggest historical paneling. The wallcovering is still a printed product. What the hand changes is the origin of the surface: the irregularity, the translucence and the faint seams began as marks made by a person, and the print carries them.

That is a useful question to ask of any designer collection. Some are built from a recognizable name licensed onto an existing pattern, and some are built from a hand that made the surface first. Both have their place, and the second gives a wall something to look at for years.

How does a pattern drawn from a painting work?

Each of my patterns begins as an original painting, and the wall draws on a passage of that canvas, so it is singular, evocative, rich and deep. I want to be exact about the process. The painting is made by hand. The wallcovering is printed by a manufacturer onto 20 oz Type II commercial-grade vinyl, an embossed face with a slight strié shimmer over a laminated fabric backing. Rolls are 24 inches wide, pre-trimmed and unpasted, with a 52-inch width for commercial projects, and printing takes about two weeks.

Donald Keene's translation of Kenkō's Essays in Idleness gives the principle I paint by: "In everything, uniformity is undesirable." A pattern drawn from a hand-painted original keeps some of that irregularity, because the mark it came from was never uniform.

How do you choose between a named collaboration and an artist-drawn pattern?

Ask three questions of any collection. Whose hand made the surface first? What was it before it was printed? How does it read in the light of your own room? Order a sample and hang it where the wall will live, then look at it at nine in the morning and at six in the evening.

Designers can order samples, request custom colorways and scale, and receive 20% off through the trade program.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Cadence wallpaper collection?

Cadence is Calico Wallpaper's first wallpaper collaboration with Athena Calderone, launched in February 2026. It draws on the texture of natural hides, comes in six colorways, and credits a French decorative painter for the hand-rendered artwork.

Is artist-designed wallpaper hand-painted?

No. Each pattern is drawn from an original hand-painted work, and the wallcovering itself is printed by a manufacturer onto 20 oz Type II commercial-grade vinyl.

What makes a wallpaper pattern singular?

A pattern that begins as a passage of one original painting carries the irregularity of the hand that made it, so it reads as one of a kind rather than a repeat built from stock motifs.

How do I choose a designer wallpaper?

Ask whose hand made the surface first, order a sample, and look at it in your own room at different times of day. Designers can request custom colorways and scale and receive 20% off through the trade program.
