Is Wallpaper Turning From Motif Into Material This Autumn?

Angela Simeone · Last updated: 10 October 2026

In short: Yes. Selected Wallpapers' autumn 2026 trend report (28 August 2026) says "Luxury shifts from what you see to what you can almost feel," with relief, fibre, deep earth colors and less literal nature leading the new collections. Designers add that a wall should support a room rather than take it over. A pattern drawn from an original painting suits that direction: it carries the mark of a hand and reads as texture before it reads as motif.

What are the autumn 2026 collections saying about walls?

That the wall is becoming a material. Selected Wallpapers & Interiors, in its autumn trend report (Soraya Vermeulen, 28 August 2026), names six signals: tactile walls that evoke stone, plaster and woven textiles; visible craftsmanship, with relief and fibres kept rather than smoothed away; deep earth colors such as cognac, rust, olive, moss and petrol; softer stripes built from subtle colour shifts; subtle metallics with patina rather than shine; and "less literal nature," where influences arrive as stone, sediment or weathered texture and abstract form rather than botanical motif.

Its own summary of the shift: "The new luxury isn't just about what a material costs, but also about the craftsmanship you can see in it." Note the source: this is a wallcovering retailer's editorial, and it quotes no outside designers, so it speaks for the publication.

Do designers want the wall to lead or to support?

To support, in the voices on record. Designer Emilie Fournet, quoted in Livingetc (Rory Robertson, 5 January 2026), says of natural wallcoverings: "Natural wallcoverings like grasscloth create a subtle backdrop in a scheme and don't take over the space."

David Harris, design director at Andrew Martin, puts the reassurance for anyone nervous about wallpaper: "It's not outdated — it's an opportunity to add your own stamp to your space." And Darci Hether, principal designer and founder of Darci Hether Interior Design, in The Spruce (Heather Bien; syndicated at AOL, no publish date on the page): "Wallpaper isn't going anywhere."

Designer Sarah Walter Boyd adds a caution about belonging: "Imposing details from a different era can feel like imposter syndrome, such as adding a dado into a 1990s build." A wall earns its place when it fits the room it is in.

What does "less literal nature" mean for an abstract pattern?

It means the pattern can behave like weather, sediment or a surface that has been worked, without drawing a single leaf. Each pattern in this studio's wallpaper collection begins as mark-making from one of my original paintings: layers of oil thinned with medium, the line left by a palette knife or a fingertip. The wall reads as singular, evocative, rich and deep, and the eye finds a rhythm rather than a motif.

How is a pattern drawn from a painting made?

The wallpaper itself is a printed product, made by a manufacturer onto 20 oz Type II commercial-grade vinyl with an embossed face and a slight strié shimmer over a laminated fabric backing, so the surface has a tactile quality of its own. Rolls are 24 inches wide, pre-trimmed and unpasted (52 inches for commercial), made to order in about two weeks. The pattern begins with a hand-painted original, and the product does not pretend to be one.

How do you choose a pattern that behaves like a material?

Ask for a sample and hold it to the light you actually have. Look for a rhythm that rewards a second look, edges that do not repeat identically, and colors that deepen at dusk. Designers and specifiers can use the Trade Program for samples and for custom colorways or scale. This post makes no fire-rating or cleaning-certification claim; specifiers should ask the studio for current documentation before specifying.
